Mad Light Bulb Giveaway!
A whole bunch of Indians descended on our suburb, each with a fold up chair and one of those red/blue striped laundry bags. They then proceeded to sit out on the median strips around our suburb in the shade and I had no clue as to what they were doing.
Then on Friday, the door bell rang... and standing at the door was an Indian girl... and she offered me some spiel that she was from some sort of company and asked me how many energy saving lightbulbs I would need in the house? "Twenty?? Thirty??" she asked... Me, in a daze, said "what, are you giving me free lightbulbs? Why?" She then said, "Wait here, I will be back in five minutes" and then I asked her if I had to do anything for these lightbulbs.
She said "we have to take your name and details down on our computer". Nevermind how they powered their computers by sitting by the side of the road all day, I said "No way" and told her not to worry about it... she seemed genuinely dismayed, but relised that I wouldnt fall for her scam.
Then yesterday, the doorbell rings again... this time, the girls answer it expecting a neighbourhood kid, but then I hear the dreaded "Hi, is your mummy home?" and I head for the door.
Standing there was this nerdy looking guy with acne sporting a lime green polo shirt with some indiscernible logo and a crackling CB radio on his hip.
"Afternoon sir, I am from the Blah Blah company and I am offering to fit your house completely with our energy saving lightbulbs!"
I said, hang on... weren't you here on Friday. He is puzzled and then asked...
"Was it an Indian person?"
I answered in the affirmative...
"Well they're really dodgy" was his reply.
Stunned, I said "Well you're not to genuine sounding yourself and I said no to them and I will say no to you too... thanks" and then I shut the door.
Can I ask... why are people willing to give you a huge amount of energy saving lightbulbs? What's the catch?

Weekend Over... Does it matter when you're unemployed?
Today was Monday and I had no Monday-itis!! I tell you what, I am seriously thinking about going to see the World Vision people and asking them to sponsor me rather than some poor unfortunate in Africa. This life of lazy luxury is actually getting appealing!!
But it can't last forever, but I can report that I am now talking to three job prospects, all of which I would take in a flash... so hopefully it won't be long now.
Now, the weekend... (am trying to work out what was different about the weekend in comparison to Friday or today?)
Saturday we did the Dancing / Shopping routine and the sad thing for me is that I have given up playing cricket this summer and I was being given score updates as to how the boys were progressing without me (poorly!) and I ensconsed myself on the lounge on Saturday night to watch the two football finals that were on, including my own team the Dragons who also played poorly to be smashed out of the competition...
Sunday... well we went out for lunch... and I watched more football! It was a bit of a second Fathers Day given Niki and the Girls were so sick the weekend before.
Now today, well that wasn't much different...
Wonder what I will do tomorrow??

Long Weekend Wasn't So Long
Tuesday morning… feels like Monday… didn’t feel like I had a long weekend as it went in a blink of an eye!
Saturday was a run around day… I bought new clothes at Penrith Plaza in between taking Kate to and from dancing and basically and as I type this I cant recall exactly what I did on Saturday afternoon… Saturday night, we had all of Niki’s family over for a catch up after the Malaysian trip and we bought a stack of pizza’s (which I ordered online for the first time – kinda weird experience!) and I went to bed reasonably early that night.
Sunday was Tommy’s 40th birthday celebrations and that was an all day (and night) gaming marathon at his place… 10:30am through to me getting home at 2:15am Sunday. Yes, Nerd City, but it was a great day. Games played (from memory): Fire & Axe, RoboRally, Betrayal in the House on Hill, Last Night on Earth (twice – cool Zombie killing game), Micro Mutants, Las Vegas Showdown, Cash & Guns… I think that covered it… Tommy’s wife cooked a great meal of lamb shanks and we had a celebratory cake and basically never left the dining table all day.
So yesterday, I slept in until 10ish and we went to Mum & Dad’s for lunch (more Malaysian tales told) and then to Glenn & Brooke’s for dinner… but we were home at 8ish so that was good being a school night and all.
So my weekend was, drinking coke, rolling dice, driving, drinking more coke, and eating and sleeping at odd times… not too unusual when you put it that way!
Oh and happy birthday Queenie… hope you got some nice socks or something!

Weekend - Pain In The Neck
It was so awful last night I actually went to bed at 7pm! Before the kids!!
And of course, I woke up at 2am this morning wide awake... so I got up and watched the cricket from the West Indies and tried to go back to sleep at around 4am. Took some Panadol this morning however and am at work and appear to be feeling a bit better.
The other painful thing was that the AusBowl website experienced a cyber attack by one of the ex-admins (well he accidentally had access) and he deleted all the content in the Forums. At least its being restored from back up.
Daniel Marinas, you're a little shit...

Weekend... Excited Girls!
The girls are excited… it’s the last weekend at home before the girls fly to Malaysia for their dance trip. Its been a long time in the planning and we scraped the money together but they’re now down to just packing.
Kate and Brooke were counting down the days this morning and they’re doing the important things like picking which Nintendo games they want to take etc etc. They both admitted to me this morning that they’re a little bit nervous about going to another country but they’re very keen.
Expect a lot of photos when they come back on Wednesday week… Lime Kettles will probably get a work out on the Blogger photo server. lol.
For myself, I will be heading to Brisbane with my mate Noyz for a bit of a “boys weekend”. We’re planning a BBQ at my mates Gools’ place on the Saturday to meet his girlfriend and their new baby girl for the first time and the Saturday night will be a big’un. Sunday will be recuperating and a quiet arvo in a bar (probably the Caxton Hotel) before going into the soccer to see Australia vs Iraq. Depending on the result it could be a bit of a party atmosphere in BrisVegas Sunday night too…
But that’s all NEXT weekend… this weekend will be quiet and helping the girls get ready for their trip.

Dancing Weekend!
Niki has been rather unwell this week and the weekend was hectic with the girls playing Netball, Kate having dance practice and Niki's Dad's birthday on Saturday and today was "Dancing Scholarship Day" in which the girls did ballet routines to get a years tuition for nix.
Unfortunately they didn't win, but they did really well and the competition was very good. To get up there and do the routines is quite a feat for the girls!
But not only was it Dancing Scholarship, but Niki as Chairperson of the Fund Raising Committee had their first crack at raising money for the trip to the USA in about 2011. They need to raise $50K and it started with a Cake Stall and a Canteen / BBQ. Niki manned the stall all day from 9:30am until 4pm and I did the BBQ. If I never see a Bacon & Egg roll again and a sausage sandwich, I'll be happy! lol.
It all went well and nearly $300 were raised. Its a start!

Wet Weekend Wrap
Wet Weekends! According to the weather men, we had better get used to them.
Cricket was washed out despite the sunshine peeking out on Saturday afternoon, the ground was awash with water…
So instead, we played board games most of the weekend. I had bought Settlers of Catan when I went to Canberra a few weeks ago and I thought it would be good game to play with the girls. If you haven’t played it, it’s a board game in which you collect cards to trade in to build roads and settlements on the island of Catan. First to 10 points wins… game play is supposed to be 60mins. But 2 and a half hours later after 3 sittings, Kate eventually won and was very happy. Having said that though, everyone enjoyed it – even Niki who tends to shy away from my Tolkien-esque genre of games. So that gets added to the “play when the sky is pissing on us” list.
Sunday was Niki’s mums 75th birthday and we had nice weather to go to the Norman Lindsay Gallery café for lunch. It was very wet on the ground though so we had to dodge the puddles to get to the restaurant but it was a good lunch with a couple of bottles of wine. It was good for Beryl to be out and about after her layoff recently (for the record, Beryl left our place on Friday after about 2 weeks).
Then it was to be home to watch the cricket, but my mate Tommy rang who had a comedy gig at Springwood for both a lunch and a dinner session and had 3 hours to kill. So he came over and we played “Return of the Heroes” with the girls as well. That too went for about 2 hours but the girls did really well and were very much into it with Kate playing the lady spell slinger and Brookie taking the role of a lady Dwarf (no beard!). Tommy and I did comparatively shit house and the girls managed each to battle through their quests and then take on the “big baddie” at the end – a Demon. Unfortunately both the girls were killed with Kate going down first and then Brooke but they had good fun. With time running out and with both Tommy and I a million miles away from getting to the bad dude, we called it quits… the girls were very happy that they did so well so it was a good fun afternoon of rolling dice.

Weekend - Documenting Not Much At All
Pretty tame weekend this weekend hampered by the weather and also Niki’s mum still staying with us. Did play cricket on the Saturday and we turned up and the grass was very long and we had a heavy downpour about half an hour before play was to start.
We gave it half an hour to dry a bit and we promptly lost the toss and were sent in… with a wet, long outfield we struggled and batted for 60 odd overs to be all out for just 86. Yes a run rate just over 1! Yours truly opened and faced a dozen balls before I middled an on-drive and short leg stuck his hand out and it stuck… great catch, but sucks to be on the end of that! We have the opposition at 1/2 at stumps after 4 overs.
Sunday was wet but Niki’s brother and sister-in-law relieved us and we took the kids to see the Water Horse. Not a bad movie considering it’s a kids movie. The girls loved it and it was nice to see a kids movie that wasn’t the usual American clap-trap.
So other than that, not much happened. Brookie registered this year for netball like her big sister and we bought the girls a netball hoop – that remains inside given the weather and we’ve come to the realisation that the girls are just doing waaay too much this year. Brooke has added Gymnastics and Netball to her already busy schedule.
I was so tired and flat yesterday that I went to bed at a bit past 9:30… must be getting old!

Mondayitis
So it was off to the pub and a couple of beers and then out to dinner with friends...
Then Sunday was a big Xmas BBQ and I forgot the camera, but the day was excellent and we didnt end up leaving until after 6pm... Jumping Castles, a BBQ, a wading pool for the kids, a bit of one touch soccer of grown ups vs the kids and waaay too many beers... (Niki was driving!)
But my good mood came acropper last night. After getting home, I decided to give the lawn a quick mow. My lawnmower (which was Dads previously and was some 20+ years old) died yet again last week and instead of getting it repaired yet again, I went to Bunnings and bought a new one. Brought it home and it worked fine last week.
Looking to run the mower quickly over the backyard - 7pm on a Sunday night - I pulled the cord and felt something crack and the cable became stuck and would only pull back about 30cms. One farking mow and its done something to itself. All my good humour went out the window. Now I have to find the receipt and get it repaired via Bunnings (which I presume will take months) or I can take it to the local lawnmower place and pay for it myself.
Not sure what to do with that, but the grass is still growing!

Gold Coast - Wet N Wild
We flew up on Thursday night on Qantas and the trip was smooth and the girls were most excited. Landing in Coolangatta, the girls enjoyed walking across the tarmac and we hopped into a hire car and headed to the hotel which only took 10mins. After checking in, we had a quick walk around town, had some ice cream at the Cold Rock and crashed out.
Friday was the big fun day at Wet'N'Wild. The girls were out of their skins and they were determined to go on everything! Brookie though was a bit scared of the rides when she got there and she was a bit under the height requirements anyway and it was left to Kate & I to fly the flag for the family.
The hit of course was the Tornado, which is a big tube that can hold 4 people which simply shoots you down a near vertical drop and out into a huge spirralling funnel. It really is an impressive ride and great fun. Kate & I did this 4 times and this video clip is that 4th time... listen carefully, you can hear Kate yell "ready Daddy!" as we're about to go down the drop! I recommend going backwards for the maximum thrill!
Kate really was the dare devil on this trip, she even went down the rides I baulked at. We went down together on the "JetStream" which is a near vertical drop slide in which you cross your ankles, put your hands behind your head and kiss your backside good bye (well, in my opinion!). We did it together, but she was keen to go once again and she went up by herself, climbed about 12-15 flights of stairs and bravely went down. It is a scary sight up there and I thought she might back out, but as you can see she loved it!
Brooke though also had a great time and warmed up to the rides as the day went on... from not wanting to get splashed in the kids "Buccaneer Bay" in the morning, just before lunch she decided she was ready to go on a ride. She picked the AquaRacer! Talk about a quantum leap in fear management!
Overall, the day at Wet'N'Wild was fantastic. Because the whole place is rides, you dont have to timetable things like at SeaWorld or Movie World. You basically wander around and jump on what you want when you want.
For the record, Kate & I went on the Tornado 4 times, the Black Hole 3 times, the SideWinder twice, the AquaRacer (with Brooke) twice, the JetStream twice (me only once!), the Terror Canyon once (big queue for that!) and the Whitewater Rapids twice. They were the traditional waterslides and even Niki went on that. I wont mention she beat me down the mountain though!
On top of the rides, there was plenty of fun times in the wave pool, Buccaneer Bay and Calypso Beach (where you float on a tube down a river dozing all the way).
I will post more about our weekend, and Nan's 80th, next post :-)

Weekend Wrap - Warning Boring Post Ahead.
Before that though, on Saturday morning we took Kate to netball - her first game in 5-6 weeks due to weather, byes and school holidays, and the Blaxland Redbacks "Sparkles" were very rusty and had their first loss of the season 0-1. Kate played very good though and she is really enjoying the netball. I will need to look into taking the girls to a Sydney Swifts game or something... Kate won "Player of the Week" and got to take home the teams trophy for the week and she was very excited. Then late in the game, the teams manager asked if Kate would mind backing up and playing a second game in the Under 9's as that team was short players. We said yes, and Kate literally was jumping out of her skin when she found out. That team lost as well, but she was very happy to have played with some older girls (and they score more goals in the U/9's the final score was about 12-7) and she had a run at Goal Shooter as well for a while, but didnt get any goals herself. A great experience for her.
Saturday night was D&D night and Tommy, Pete, Grant and Nate came around to kick off the "Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil ". I will probably get around to posting a first session narration in the forum, but a good night was had by all. The game ended around midnight and we'll be playing every 4-6 weeks. I, as DM, was a fair bit rusty with the rules!!
Sunday was more relaxing... the spent the morning after a sleep in helping the girls paint their cardboard cubby houses. Niki picked up for just $10 at Go-Lo some cardboard houses that the kids can sit in. They're like a giant colouring in book style cubby house and the girls were painting in the bricks, flowers and vines and using texta's to colour in the buttflies and lady beetles on the side. After spending an hour and half doing that, I watched Saints get trounced by the Warriors and then had a bit of an afternoon nap.
BBQ'ed for dinner, including some Holoumi cheese... the girls played a muck around game of D&D after dinner for an hour (my books and stuff were still on the table) and then it was a quiet night of tele and websurfing where I played around with Firefox extensions... GOD! How exciting!!!

Queenie Queenie, Who's Got The Ball
Australia, as a Commonwealth country gets today off despite a) we pretty much all want to be a republic in our own right and b) today isnt actually the Queen's real birthday.
But it is a day off, so we'll take it!
It is reason to celebrate as Paris remains in custody (the evil girl that she is) and the world is safe at least for the next 40 odd days... amazing how a spoilt rich girl gets so many headlines given the worlds problems...
The rains in New South Wales have abated for the time being and whilst us people in the mountains were not in danger of flooding, I was joking the other night that there was so much water falling from the sky that I thought my property may soon have water views - despite its 230m odd elevation above greater Sydney! hehe!
Today has been a lazy day... I have glued and pinned some blood bowl minis (a Minotaur and a Beast of Nurgle to be precise) and am still painting the orcs slowly for my mate Noyz. Kate has a ballet exam practice this afternoon and I am waiting to watch my Dragons take on the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL match this evening... and thats about it, nothin' else happening but I did just return from the Village shops were I picked up a Cappuccino... love winter holiday afternoon's in the mountains :)
Yesterday, we went to Tommy's son Asher's 5th birthday party. Super Hero theme and Batman turned up to entertain the kids! He's a comic mate of Tommy's who does kids parties in a variety of costumes... he was excellent and had a pretty well done Batman costume and entertained the kids non-stop for over an hour. He was then off to do another party as a Mutant Ninja Turtle apparently.
Saturday was pouring rain and we basically did Sweet FA apart from visiting friends Julie & Con in the morning and Niki's parents in the afternoon...
Been a very relaxing weekend... should be more of them!

Sparkles Win Again!
With 2 subs rotating, she sat out quarter 3 and then gave great service in the 4th quarter from Centre to allow 3 more goals to be scored.
Very impressive game from our Katie! Well Done!!!

Weekend...
Kate has netball early tomorrow morning, but other than that I think we're ok for Saturday. Sunday Brookie has a dance troupe performance and Kate has a friends birthday party at Adventure Golf ( i.e. putt-putt) on Sunday afternoon.
Other than that, its laying low and perhaps mowing the lawn and washing the car(s) and I also saw yesterday a Mobile Dog Wash in the area too... so should look to get Zoe the Wonder Dog spruiced up too...
Saturday was going to be a games day with Tommy & co, but that got cancelled last minute as Tommy's away on tour so I will probably take advantage to paint up some more miniatures and do some writing for D&D... I have been asked to get a regular D&D game running too, so I may give that some thought.
Hope you all have good weekends :)

Friday Arvo... Weekend on the mind
This weekend is a bit busy given the lazy ones we've had recently. The Blaxland Redbacks U/8's Sparkles go around again in the Netball after being rained out last week... so I am looking forward to that, but also the coffee and bacon & egg sandwhich that I will have for brekkie :)
Saturday night, friends Julie & Con are coming around for dinner... Niki's cooking up Mexican style fajitas and burritos and tacos apparently... mmmm!
Sunday is a combo birthday for my Dad and also my nephew who is turning 1. So its lunch at my sisters place... which will probably turn into dinner, so it will be a long day.
So thats about it, lots of socialising and the netball is always a laugh... Go Sparkles!!

Ooh Aaah - a Weekend of Farce
But what I really want to write about today is the bloody Cricket World Cup Final! How ridiculous was it! Imagine playing the end of the game in the dark? I was watching it live on Sunday morning and I couldnt believe that the umpires wanted to play it out? I thought the Duckworth Lewis scoring system was supposed to stop all this shenanigans? (If you have no idea what I am talking about, read this)
But anyway, at least the best team did win and Glenn McGrath went out on the best note possible. Even though he didnt take more wickets than Shane Warne or Murali, I still tend to rate him the better bowler overall. To open the bowling for Australia for so long and really keep opposing teams under the hammer over such a long career, McGrath showed time and time again that he is (was) the best of all time. From day 1 through to yesterday, he had a metronomic action that churned out line and length balls that batsman repeatedly couldnt hit... in my mind, he is the greatest bowler of all time.
Ooh Aah Glenn McGrath!
