Mad Light Bulb Giveaway!

A funny thing has happened over the past few days here in our suburb...

A whole bunch of Indians descended on our suburb, each with a fold up chair and one of those red/blue striped laundry bags. They then proceeded to sit out on the median strips around our suburb in the shade and I had no clue as to what they were doing.

Then on Friday, the door bell rang... and standing at the door was an Indian girl... and she offered me some spiel that she was from some sort of company and asked me how many energy saving lightbulbs I would need in the house? "Twenty?? Thirty??" she asked... Me, in a daze, said "what, are you giving me free lightbulbs? Why?" She then said, "Wait here, I will be back in five minutes" and then I asked her if I had to do anything for these lightbulbs.

She said "we have to take your name and details down on our computer". Nevermind how they powered their computers by sitting by the side of the road all day, I said "No way" and told her not to worry about it... she seemed genuinely dismayed, but relised that I wouldnt fall for her scam.

Then yesterday, the doorbell rings again... this time, the girls answer it expecting a neighbourhood kid, but then I hear the dreaded "Hi, is your mummy home?" and I head for the door.

Standing there was this nerdy looking guy with acne sporting a lime green polo shirt with some indiscernible logo and a crackling CB radio on his hip.

"Afternoon sir, I am from the Blah Blah company and I am offering to fit your house completely with our energy saving lightbulbs!"

I said, hang on... weren't you here on Friday. He is puzzled and then asked...

"Was it an Indian person?"

I answered in the affirmative...

"Well they're really dodgy" was his reply.

Stunned, I said "Well you're not to genuine sounding yourself and I said no to them and I will say no to you too... thanks" and then I shut the door.

Can I ask... why are people willing to give you a huge amount of energy saving lightbulbs? What's the catch?

Wild Weather...

Its Friday! Where has the time gone! Today I am very busy at work and will be out and about today but I am very keen to get out the door closer to 5pm rather than 7-8pm. Last night I left the office around 7ish and was driving home rather than training it… and I was absolutely pelted with the largest storm I have ever experienced! It was torrential rain and the wind was blowing but what was freaky was that the lightning was almost solid. The bolts would come down from the clouds and instead of being instant flashes they would sit there and hold their position for a good 4-5 seconds. Whilst this happened the cloud looked like it was being heated by a laser beam rather than it throwing bolts down from the sky. I have to say it was very surreal.

This story from the smh.com.au shows a picture taken where I was driving last night – exiting the Lane Cove Tunnel and onto the M2. As you can see the lightning is very solid. But when I drove through the storm and out the other side, the clouds were the most weird looking... we had high clouds sitting up still whilst underneath, almost horizontal tornado looking clouds were whooshing by at a very low altitude. Then as I approached the M7/M4 junction, I snapped the picture below...

It doesnt do it justice, but that horizontal cloud above the exit sign was moving very quickly and rolling on itself and then when I went up the M7 off ramp (at the Lighthorse interchange) I was probably above it looking down.

Very weird...

Spooky...

Spooky...

I succumbed to the nerd pressure and signed up on Facebook.  I don’t quite see what the fuss is about other than I spent most of the time searching for people who I have lost contact with… old school and uni friends and ex-work colleagues.

Last night I found the profile of an old uni mate I haven’t seen in about 12 years… and I sent him a hello through the Facebook site.

I get to work this morning and am crossing the road and I hear this “G’day Clay!” and sure enough it’s the same guy I found on Facebook last night… talk about freaking spooky!  We were both in a rush, exchanged business cards and I said that I had sent him a message via his Facebook page and he said he hadn’t checked it.

Very freaky….

Take The Handwriting Quiz...

I dont normally do these online things with an intent to post them, but I found this description of me pretty accurate... (cue freaky music)

What Your Handwriting Says About You

You are sometimes a very energetic person, but you are sometimes quite lethargic. You're moody, prone to ups and downs, and you don't have a lot of endurance.

You are somewhat outgoing, but you're not a natural extrovert. You think first before you act. You tend to be independent, rational, and logical.

You are balanced and grounded. You know how to get along well with others.

You need a bit of space in your life, but you're not a recluse. You expect people to give you a small amount of privacy, and you respect their privacy as well.

You are somewhat traditional, but you are also open to change. You listen to your head and your heart.

You are a decent communicator. You eventually get your point across, but sometimes you leave things a bit ambiguous.

Adelaide - The Land That Time Forgot

Went to Adelaide...

Wow.

I had been there before, but really for just the day for work... this trip I spent the best part of 3 days there and because of the nature of the work I was therefore, spent most of that time out in the suburbs at a place called Mawson Lakes.

After spending the time there, I got the real feeling that the place was still hanging on to the 1970's.  I saw so many long haired / long moustached guys in flannellette shirts and tight jeans that I thought I was in some sort of old Clint Eastwood movie.  The place was dusty, cars were old / dusty (I know we're in drought, but more so than Sydney) and the place was full of hoons running up and down the street.  The number of cars running around without mufflers was amazing.

The cabbies were also a rare breed.  One of my colleagues is Vietnamese and the first cabbie we got made mention that he too was Chinese.  The problem was he looked Greek to me...  he kept chatting in some form of asian language, but we all agreed he was jibbering nonsence and was a bit mentally unstable.

Then that brought us to the fact that Adelaide is the murder capital of Australia and that stories of Snow Town came up... at one point Snow Town was mentioned in a cab and the cabbie hit the brakes and said "dont mention that out the front of the church"... and yes, we were driving past a church at the time.

Having said all that the Hotel was great (the Rooftop Majestic on the corner of Rundle and Frome) and we had some good food between all the meetings.  In particular we had dinner at The Manse, which was very nice.  Not normally a fan of French cuisine, but it was good...

Tomorrow, is Canberra....
